The Story
Named after the Zanafi tribe of the Taznakht region in the High Atlas Mountains, the Zanafi rug is a remarkable example of traditional Berber craftsmanship. Like the Hanbel (or Kilim) rug, it features an intricate geometric design and high-desnity flat-weave, making it exceptionally durable.
Handwoven from 100% wool, unlike Kilims which may incorporate cotton or other fibers, Zanafi rugs are distinguished by their neutral and earthy tones, achieved through natural pigment dyes. Their geometric patterns are striking, with clean, linear designs that demonstrate the beauty of near perfect symmetry.
Despite their understated motifs, Zanafi rugs are woven with intricate craftsmanship, notably using the chedwi technique, which adds to their unique texture and strength. Compared to Kilim rugs, Zanafi rugs are denser, offering superior durability and resilience.
